Phyllostachys aureocaulis ‘Holochrysa'
Phyllostachys aureocaulis ‘Holochrysa’, the true 'Golden Bamboo'. New shoots are golden yellow and take on slight red or orange hues when exposed to sunlight for their first year or so. The canes have signature congested internodes on the lower portion.
Size:
Height: Typically 8–12 feet tall at maturity
Spread: Forms a tight, fountain-like clump about 4–6 feet wide
Shape: Arching, elegant form — the canes naturally bend outward like a fountain
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast for a clumping bamboo
Light requirements:
Part Shade to Full Sun:
Best color develops with morning sun and afternoon shade
In cooler climates, it can tolerate more sun
In hotter areas, it appreciates protection from intense midday/afternoon sun
Growth Habit:
Culms (canes):
Emerge bright green, then mature to golden-yellow with sun exposure — the name Holochrysa refers to its "entirely golden" (holo- = whole, chrysa = golden) stems
Some culms may have a soft reddish-purple blush at the nodes (especially in cooler weather)
Leaves:
Small, narrow, and dark green, typical of Fargesia bamboos
Dense foliage provides a lush, soft texture
Why Choose Holochrysa?
Golden Canes: Adds a bright, sunny feel to shady gardens
Non-Invasive: Forms tight clumps, no runners
Low Maintenance: Very little pruning needed; mainly remove old or damaged canes
Hardy to USDA Zone 5 (down to about -20°F / -29°C)
Extremely cold-tolerant — suitable for northern gardens where many other bamboos would struggle
