“Wolong” is a wide leafed cultivar of clumping Fargesia robusta, underutilized in Northwest landscapes as a natural looking, condensed screen.

Appearance:

  • Avg height: 12’ in the ground. Canes taper towards the top and are pulled down by the weight of new leaves, giving the grove a sprawling appearance. “Wolong” literally translates to “lying low dragon”.

  • Diameter: 3/4” -1” canes have a waxy coating and notably shiny appearance.

  • Broad, dark green leaves reach 2-3” wide and 5-6” long, with a slightly drooping shape lending a graceful appearance.

Growth Habits:

  • Fargesia robusta wolong is a non-invasive species that slowly expands over time, forming a 4-8 feet diameter base of canes. Canes arch outwards, creating a dense cushion that can cover 10+ lateral feet.

  • It can take longer to attain height as the canes droop under the weight of leaves. For better or worse, Wolong is slower to establish and cane take an extra few years to reach expected height.

Growing Conditions:

  • Prefers moist, well-drained soil and can tolerate partial to full shade.

  • It performs well in large diameter pots and really expands to fill a gap.

  • Morning or filtered sun is ideal, but can generlly take full Seattle sun given adequate water.

  • Fargesia robusta wolong is cold-hardy to 0°
