Atrovaginata (formerly Ph. congesta) is another timber variety capable of producing soup can diameter, very tall and straight canes in the Puget Sound region. Known for a slight scent sandalwood in summer heat, this is an especially vigorous running bamboo that requires a large, wide open area to mature.

Height: Realistic height in the Seattle/Puget Sound region is 30-40’, possibly higher if given enough room to grow.

Culms (Canes): Canes have a waxy texture and attractive olive green color. Older canes a emit a faint scent of sandalwood on hot days.

Leaves: Long, narrow tapered leaves are notably stiff and produce a textured canopy.

Habitat: A unique characteristic of Atrovaginata is it’s tolerance for perpetually damp soil. A good choice (see also: Phyllostachys parvafolia) for pond or creek-side plantings. Prefers mostly full sun - partial shade.

Hardiness: Remains evergreen privacy throughout winter and can withstand sustained -10°F temps.

Growth Rate: All timber variety bamboos develop large root and rhizome systems that are naturally programmed to spread out and form a grove. Ph. atrovaginata is especially advantageous and best suited for wide open spaces + containment strategy.

Landscaping and Uses: This one grows especially tall and straight, a potential option for 3rd story privacy. The rhizome tips are especially hardened and sharp and able to thrive in boggy soil. It’s best suited for large, stout containers or wide open landscapes.

Caution: All running forms of bamboo require proper forethought and containment strategies including root barrier and raised containers. Understanding the growth habit and pairing the right variety is imperative before you plant bamboo, let us help you through the process!
